IMPORTANT ELECTION INFORMATION – April 21, 2026 Special Election

NOTICE

 Election Officers and Staff are NOT allowed to read, explain, or discuss the Proposed Constitutional Amendment on the ballot.  

Voters must research the meaning and intent of the amendment prior to voting.

Special Election:     

April 21, 2026  

REFERENDUM: Redistricting

AN ID IS REQUIRED TO VOTE AT THE POLLS.

Please verify your voter registration, polling place, 
 and VALID ID before voting!

 

POLLS OPEN 6am to 7pm

 

Tuesday, April 14, 2026: Last day to register to vote or change your voter registration information for this election.

 

Mailed voter registration applications must be sent to the Office of Elections and postmarked on or before the deadline.


EARLY VOTING

Monday – Friday, March 6 – April 17, 2026: 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. (closed 12noon – 1:00pm for lunch)

Saturday, April 11 & April 18, 2026: 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.

 

Saturday, April 18, 2026: Last day to vote early 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.

MAIL ABSENTEE VOTING

 

Request an Absentee ballot online: elections.virginia.gov

Absentee ballots ARE counted.

 

Friday, April 10, 2026: Last day to request an absentee ballot by mail. Applications must be received in the Office of Elections by 5 p.m.  

 

Tuesday, April 21, 2026: Election Day ALL DROPPED OFF Absentee voted ballots must be returned to the Office of Elections by 7 p.m. (Virginia time) to be counted.

 

Friday, April 24, 2026: Election Day ALL MAILED Absentee voted ballots must be returned to the Office of Elections by NOON. (Virginia time) to be counted.

Virginia Department of Elections: Proposed Amendment for April 2026 Special Election

Important Dates to Remember:

  • March 6 – Early voting begins.
  • April 10 – Last day to request an absentee ballot by mail or online.
  • April 14 – Deadline to register to vote and cast a regular ballot.
  • April 15 – Same-day registration begins. Anyone registering and voting at the same time will have to cast a provisional ballot.
  • April 18 – Last day of early voting.
  • April 21 – ELECTION DAY
  • April 24 – All mailed ballots must be received by the general registrar’s office by noon.

All voter registration and absentee ballot voting forms can be completed online at www.vote.virginia.gov Or in the Office located at 229 N. Market Street, Petersburg, VA 23803.

Every polling place is handicap accessible, there are parking spaces and a telephone number for each polling place to call and advise need assistance if over age 65 or disabled. It is not a quick Drive-Thru service, takes a bit so be patient, arriving there does not cut the line as such, they come when available to assist. Why I recommend Absentee voting, you complete the form, and we mail the ballots once ready September 19th to your home and you vote when it’s convenient. Stamped self-addressed envelope to return it in, or you can drop the ballot back off in the drop boxes outside and inside the Elections Office.

You can check your Polling location online at www.vote.virginia.gov or call the Office. We changed Ward 1 from Blandford Academy - will now be voting at Lakemont Elementary, 51 Gibbons Avenue. Every voter in Ward 1 will be mailed a new Voter ID card to advise of this change. Stay aware.

This office cannot assist you with your completion of form information.  Some data must be completed online to run for each Office and all Campaign Financial reporting is performed online by you, deadlines apply.
