Did You Know

The roots of Memorial Day trace back to a small act of remembrance in the City of Petersburg. Shortly after the Civil War ended, on June 9, 1865, Nora Davidson and her students gathered at Blandford Cemetery. Together, they carefully decorated the graves of soldiers who had fallen in the Siege of Petersburg. The simple act of placing flowers moved Mary Logan, the wife of Union General John Logan, who witnessed this moment. Inspired, General Logan took this idea of honoring the fallen to the national stage. Through his leadership, Decoration Day was established, a tradition that has since evolved into what we now know as Memorial Day.

Today, as we remember all who have given their lives in service, we carry forward the legacy of remembrance and gratitude. May we always honor their memory and the freedom their sacrifice provides.

Blandford Church is open for tours Thursday - Sunday and by appointment. Plan your visit: www.visitpetersburgva.org.
