Mission Statement
The Petersburg Bureau of Police is committed to being a premier law enforcement agency, by engaging our community, building trust, and reducing the fear of crime.
History
On December 18, 1809, the Mayor and Common Council petitioned the General Assembly requesting an act empowering the Common Hall to appoint a master of police. To vest him with sufficient authority to carry their ordinances into execution, and to levy tax upon the inhabitants for compensation for the officer's services.
More than 200 years later, the Petersburg Bureau of Police has grown to an authorized strength of 120+ sworn; dedicated men and women, who accepted the challenge to maintain peace, order, and improve the quality of life for our residents, businesses and visitors.
In 2020, Petersburg Bureau of Police hit a major milestone by becoming an Accredited agency for the first time in our history. Accreditation is through the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC) and was earned through a collaborative approach across all divisions and personnel.
