"Our staff is here to serve you, the taxpayers and citizens of Petersburg". The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is a constitutional office established by the Constitution of Virginia and directed by local city ordinances and the Code of Virginia 58.1-3103. The Commissioner is elected every four years and is the chief tax authority for the locality from which they are elected. This office is responsible for maintaining real estate ownership information and for overseeing the Tax Relief Program for the Elderly and Disabled. We are responsible for accurately assessing all personal and business property, machinery and tools, business license, public service corporations, bank franchise tax, consumption tax, meals and lodging tax, admissions tax and cigarette tax. We also assist our residents with filing and processing of Virginia State Income taxes, resulting in faster refunds. We provide these services for our citizens and for the continued growth of Petersburg.

Real Property is valued by a separate agency, the Office of the City Assessor.
