DUTIES: Performs responsible protective service work in the Police Department; does related work as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications include high school graduate or equivalent with college work in criminal justice or police science preferred; must be 21 years of age at time of appointment. Preference will be given to certified Police Officers. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Final candidates must successfully complete all entrance requirements. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical agility and endurance for running, self-defense and other strenuous activities; ability to stand, stoop, walk and climb in areas of limited or difficult access; ability to lift objects weighing in excess of 25 pounds on a regular basis; ability to operate a vehicle at high rates of speed; ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions; ability to wear protective equipment. SPECIAL NOTICES: Final candidates must agree to maintain employment with the City of Petersburg Bureau of Police for a period of thirty-six (36) months after completion of training. In the event an employee resigns, the employee will be obligated to reimburse the City for training. Such reimbursement will be calculated proportionately on the number of months remaining in the thirty-six (36) month period at the time of separation. Final candidates will be required to submit to an extensive background investigation which includes DMV record, polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening.
