Animal Control
Animal ControlPetersburg Animal Care & Control is supervised and managed by Chief Warden, Deborah Broughton, under the direction of the Chief of Police of the Petersburg Bureau of Police. Our Animal Control Officers are animal code enforcement officers with the power to write summons for violations of City Ordinance and the Code of Virginia. 

Some examples include:
  • Animals over the age of four (4) months are required to have a current rabies vaccination
  • Canines in the City of Petersburg are required to have a city license renewable every year through the office of the Treasurer
  • Canines are required to be maintained on the owners property and not allowed to run at large unless on a lease and under the owners control and any and all other codes.
Our Staff
Our staff consists of four (4) trained and certified Animal Control Officers who work 12 hour shifts to provide maximum coverage throughout the city.

Our officers respond to all animal emergency calls such as:
  • Bites or scratches
  • Animal attacks on livestock and humans
  • Canines running at large
  • Animal welfare issues such as no food, water, shelter, illegal tethering, lack of medical treatment or cruelty as mandated under the Code of Virginia
  • Illegal animal fighting, breeding, selling or purchasing of same
  • Livestock running loose, illegal kept or against City ordinance or the Code of Virginia
  • Suspected rabies cases
  • Assist Law Enforcement Officers in the performance of their duties.
