Office of City Assessor


The office of City Assessor strives to provide fair and equitable assessments for all city properties. We are committed to maintaining accurate information, the implementation of innovative technology and providing the highest standard of professionalism for the benefit of our citizens and visitors.

The City Assessor is appointed by Petersburg City Council to oversee the:

  • Annual reassessment of 14,000 parcels of real estate
    The city operates an annual reassessment program with an objective to establish an equitable assessment/sales ratio on July 1st of each year. Each neighborhood and class of property is assessed after analysis of sales prices, construction costs, property characteristics and other trends relevant to market value.

  • Assessment of all new construction
    Assessed value created through the building permit process, physical inspection or other discovery is added to the land book on a daily basis.

  • Maintenance of current property ownership files
    Copies of all recorded deeds, deeds of trust, and property plats are routinely examined by the office to insure that ownership information is correctly cataloged into the city database. The land book is printed on the effective date of July 1st of each year displaying this information.

  • Maintenance of city tax maps
    The office provides up-to-date tax maps for assessment purposes and maintains a copy for public viewing. Reduced-scaled copies of individual tax maps are also available to the public for a nominal fee.

  • Building and property characteristics file
    The land and building characteristics used in the assessment analyses are maintained as an on-going office function. This information is available to the public via the city web-site and by computer screen in the City Assessor's Office. Printed copies of this information are available for a nominal fee.

  • Land-use Program
    Certain properties that qualify for special assessment due to its continuing use as agricultural, horticultural, tree farm or open space are monitored for adherence. Information about this program can be obtained from the City Assessor's Office.

  • Rehabilitation Program
    Some properties may be eligible for a partial exemption of assessment provided certain requirements are met as described in Petersburg City Code 106-131 thru 106-135. Additional information can be obtained on this web-site or by calling the City Assessor's Office.
