This program aims to enhance the appearance of Petersburg’s Central Business District streetscape, offering design assistance and financial reimbursement for commercial exterior improvements. Grants are awarded on a first come, first served basis to current and prospective businesses in the designated area; applications are available [here] and in the Planning Office and Economic Development Office. Improvements must include exterior improvements for each street facing frontage, and can also include the correction of any interior code violations. Up to $10,000 or one third of the cost of work will be reimbursed for approved applications.
Additional information can be found in the application and [here] in the program's brochure.
Funds of up to $3,000 are also allocated for design assistance. If approved for a grant, an architect will be assigned to the application for an elevation, site plan, and preliminary cost estimate for the work. The designs will take inspiration from the historic character of the area.
If approved for a grant, the applicant must create at least one full-time position in their business within two years of the completed renovation. The new position must be filled by a person of previously low to moderate income status. More information about this requirement is explained in the Grant Application.
